Formula

The formula to calculate the amount of paint needed (PA) is:

\[ \text{PA} = \frac{A \times C}{Y} \]

Where:

\( \text{PA} \) is the amount of paint needed (gallons)
\( A \) is the area of the deck (square feet)
\( C \) is the number of coats of paint
\( Y \) is the yield of the paint (square feet per gallon)

Definitions

Deck Paint: A specially formulated paint used to protect and enhance the aesthetic appeal of decks, porches, and other outdoor wooden structures. It is designed to withstand the elements, resist fading, chipping, and peeling, and provide a non-slip surface for safety.
Area of Deck (A): The total surface area of the deck to be painted, measured in square feet.
Number of Coats (C): The number of layers of paint to be applied.
Yield of Paint (Y): The coverage provided by one gallon of paint, measured in square feet per gallon.

Example

Let's say the area of the deck is 500 square feet, the number of coats is 2, and the yield of the paint is 350 square feet per gallon. Using the formula:

\[ \text{PA} = \frac{500 \times 2}{350} \]

We get:

\[ \text{PA} \approx 2.86 \text{ gallons} \]

So, the amount of paint needed is approximately 2.86 gallons.
