What is an Education Index?

The Education Index is a tool developed by the United Nations to measure the educational attainment levels of various countries. It is part of the Human Development Index and is calculated using the mean years of schooling for adults aged 25 years and older, and the expected years of schooling for children of school-entry age. The index ranges from 0 to 1, with 1 being the highest possible score, indicating a high level of education in the country.

Example Calculation

Consider an example where:

Mean Years of Schooling Index (MYSI): 0.8
Expected Years of Schooling Index (EYSI): 0.9

Using the formula to calculate the Education Index:

\[ EI = \frac{0.8 + 0.9}{2} = \frac{1.7}{2} = 0.85 \]

This means that the education index for this example is 0.85.
