Calculate Ejection Fraction Percentage (EF)

Formula

The formula to calculate the Ejection Fraction Percentage (EF) is:

\[ EF = \left( \frac{SV}{EDV} \right) \times 100 \]

Where:

Example

Let's say the stroke volume (SV) is 70 mL and the end-diastolic volume (EDV) is 120 mL. Using the formula:

\[ EF = \left( \frac{70}{120} \right) \times 100 \approx 58.33 \% \]

So, the ejection fraction percentage is approximately 58.33%.

What is Ejection Fraction?

Ejection fraction (EF) is a measurement, expressed as a percentage, of how much blood the left ventricle pumps out with each contraction. It is a key indicator of heart health and function. A normal ejection fraction ranges from 55% to 70%. An ejection fraction below this range may indicate heart disease or heart failure, while an ejection fraction above this range can be a sign of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or other conditions.
