Gross Floor Area Calculator

Formula

To calculate the gross floor area (\(GFA\)):

\[ GFA = A \times F \]

Where:

\(GFA\) is the gross floor area (ft²)
\(A\) is the average area of each floor in the building (ft²)
\(F\) is the total number of floors in the building

The area of each individual floor can further be calculated using the following formula:

\[ A = L \times W \]

Where:

\(L\) is the length of the floor (ft)
\(W\) is the width of the floor (ft)

What is Gross Floor Area?

A gross floor area is defined as the sum of the areas of all floors in a building. A floor is typically limited to those with a ceiling height of at least 7.5 feet. In general, any floors that meet the height requirement are included in the gross floor area. This includes garages, mezzanines, basements, etc.

Example Calculation 1

Let's assume the following values:

Average Area of Each Floor (\(A\)) = 2000 ft²
Total Number of Floors (\(F\)) = 5

Using the formula:

\[ GFA = 2000 \times 5 = 10000 \text{ ft²} \]

The gross floor area is 10000 ft².

Example Calculation 2

Let's assume the following values:

Average Area of Each Floor (\(A\)) = 1500 ft²
Total Number of Floors (\(F\)) = 3

Using the formula:

\[ GFA = 1500 \times 3 = 4500 \text{ ft²} \]

The gross floor area is 4500 ft².
