Where:

What is Horizon Distance?

Horizon distance is the total distance a person can see to the horizon, given a certain height or eye level. In other words, it is the furthest distance a person can see at a given height due to the curvature of the Earth.

Example Calculation 1

Let's assume the following values:

Eye Height Above Sea Level (h) = 100 feet

Using the formula:

\[ D = 1.22459 \times \sqrt{100} \approx 12.25 \text{ miles} \]

The Horizon Distance is approximately 12.25 miles.

Example Calculation 2

Let's assume the following values:

Eye Height Above Sea Level (h) = 50 feet

Using the formula:

\[ D = 1.22459 \times \sqrt{50} \approx 8.66 \text{ miles} \]

The Horizon Distance is approximately 8.66 miles.
