Cholesterol Levels

Formula

To calculate the lipids ratio:

\[ R = \frac{TC - HDL}{HDL} \]

Where:

What is a Lipids Ratio?

The lipids ratio, also known as the cholesterol ratio, is a measure used to evaluate the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It is calculated by dividing the total cholesterol minus the HDL cholesterol by the HDL cholesterol. A lower ratio indicates a lower risk of heart disease, while a higher ratio suggests a higher risk. This ratio provides a more comprehensive understanding of cholesterol levels compared to looking at total cholesterol or HDL cholesterol alone.

Example Calculations

Example 1:

Assume the following cholesterol levels:

Using the formula:

\[ R = \frac{200 - 50}{50} = \frac{150}{50} = 3.00 \]

The lipids ratio is 3.00.

Example 2:

Assume the following cholesterol levels:

Using the formula:

\[ R = \frac{250 - 75}{75} = \frac{175}{75} \approx 2.33 \]

The lipids ratio is approximately 2.33.
