Formula

The formula to calculate the moment capacity is:

\(M = \text{Fy} \times \text{S}\)

Where:

M is the moment capacity (lb-ft)
Fy is the yield strength of the material (psi)
S is the section modulus (in³)

Example Calculations

Example 1:

Yield Strength (Fy): 50000 psi
Section Modulus (S): 100 in³

Calculation:

\(M = 50000 \times 100 = 5000000 \text{ lb-ft}\)

Example 2:

Yield Strength (Fy): 60000 psi
Section Modulus (S): 150 in³

Calculation:

\(M = 60000 \times 150 = 9000000 \text{ lb-ft}\)
