Prandtl Number using Diffusivities Calculator

Calculate Prandtl Number

Formula

The formula to calculate the Prandtl Number (Pr) is:

\[ Pr = \frac{\nu}{\alpha} \]

Definition

Prandtl number (Pr) or Prandtl group is a dimensionless number, named after the German physicist Ludwig Prandtl, defined as the ratio of momentum diffusivity to thermal diffusivity. Momentum Diffusivity most commonly refers to the diffusion, or spread of momentum between particles (atoms or molecules) of matter, often in the fluid state. Thermal diffusivity is the thermal conductivity divided by density and specific heat capacity at constant pressure.

Example Calculation

Let's assume the following values:

Using the formula:

\[ Pr = \frac{4}{5.58} \approx 0.716845878136201 \]

The Prandtl Number is approximately 0.716845878136201.
