Formula

The formula to calculate the Saturated Unit Weight of Soil (Y) is:

\[ Y = \frac{WDS + WM}{V} \]

Where:

\( Y \) is the Saturated Unit Weight of Soil (g/cm³)
\( WDS \) is the total weight of dry soil (g)
\( WM \) is the total weight of moisture (g)
\( V \) is the total volume of wet soil (cm³)

Definitions

Saturated Unit Weight of Soil (Y): The weight per unit volume of soil when it is fully saturated with water.
Total Weight of Dry Soil (WDS): The weight of the soil when it is completely dry.
Total Weight of Moisture (WM): The weight of the water content in the soil.
Total Volume of Wet Soil (V): The volume of the soil when it is wet.

Example

Let's say the Total Weight of Dry Soil (WDS) is 500 grams, the Total Weight of Moisture (WM) is 200 grams, and the Total Volume of Wet Soil (V) is 300 cm³. Using the formula:

\[ Y = \frac{500 + 200}{300} \]

We get:

\[ Y \approx 2.33 \text{ g/cm³} \]

So, the Saturated Unit Weight of Soil is approximately 2.33 g/cm³.
