Formula

To calculate the Transferrin Saturation (\(TS\)):

\[ TS = \frac{SI \times 70.9}{TIBC} \]

Where:

\(TS\) is the Transferrin Saturation (%)
\(SI\) is the Serum Iron (µg/dL)
\(TIBC\) is the Total Iron Binding Capacity (µg/dL)

What is Transferrin Saturation?

Transferrin saturation is a medical diagnostic test that measures the percentage of transferrin, a protein that carries iron in the blood, that is saturated with iron. It is used to diagnose iron deficiency or iron overload disorders such as hemochromatosis. A low transferrin saturation indicates iron deficiency, while a high transferrin saturation indicates iron overload.

Example Calculation 1

Let's assume the following values:

Serum Iron (\(SI\)) = 100 µg/dL
Total Iron Binding Capacity (\(TIBC\)) = 300 µg/dL

Using the formula:

\[ TS = \frac{100 \times 70.9}{300} = 23.63 \% \]

The Transferrin Saturation is 23.63%.

Example Calculation 2

Let's assume the following values:

Serum Iron (\(SI\)) = 150 µg/dL
Total Iron Binding Capacity (\(TIBC\)) = 250 µg/dL

Using the formula:

\[ TS = \frac{150 \times 70.9}{250} = 42.54 \% \]

The Transferrin Saturation is 42.54%.
