The formula to calculate the transmission delay is:

$TD = \frac{S}{B}$

Where:

$TD$ is the transmission delay
$S$ is the size of the data packet
$B$ is the bandwidth of the network

What is a Transmission Delay?

A transmission delay is a measure of the time it takes to put a data packet onto a transmission link. Transmission delay is also commonly referred to as store-and-forward delay or packetization delay because, in essence, it’s the time it takes for a packet to be pushed onto a wire.

Example Calculation 1

Let's assume the following values:

Size of Data Packet (S) = 1000 bits
Bandwidth of Network (B) = 100 bits/sec

Using the formula:

$TD = \frac{1000}{100} = 10 \text{ seconds}$

The transmission delay would be 10 seconds.

Example Calculation 2

Let's assume the following values:

Size of Data Packet (S) = 500 bits
Bandwidth of Network (B) = 200 bits/sec

Using the formula:

$TD = \frac{500}{200} = 2.5 \text{ seconds}$

The transmission delay would be 2.5 seconds.
