What is an Adjusted Gross Score?

Adjusted Gross Score is a golf term that refers to a player’s gross score after it has been adjusted for the maximum number of strokes that can be taken on any hole, according to the Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) guidelines set by the United States Golf Association (USGA). This adjustment is made to prevent one or two bad holes from dramatically increasing a player’s handicap. The maximum number of strokes per hole depends on the player’s handicap index.

Example Calculation 1

Let's assume the following values:

Using the formula:

\[ AGS = 90 - (15 \times 0.96) = 90 - 14.4 = 75.6 \]

The Adjusted Gross Score is 75.6.

Example Calculation 2

Let's assume the following values:

Using the formula:

\[ AGS = 85 - (10 \times 0.96) = 85 - 9.6 = 75.4 \]

The Adjusted Gross Score is 75.4.
