Formula

The formula to calculate the Thickness from GSM and Density is:

\[ \text{Thickness} (\mu m) = \left(\frac{\text{GSM}}{\text{Density}}\right) \times 1000 \]

Where:

\(\text{GSM}\) is the weight of the material in grams per square meter
\(\text{Density}\) is the density of the material in grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm³)
\(\text{Thickness}\) is the resulting thickness of the material in micrometers (µm)

What is GSM?

GSM stands for grams per square meter and is a standard unit of measurement for the weight of paper and other materials. A higher GSM indicates a heavier and typically thicker material. It is an important specification for quality control in manufacturing and purchasing materials.

Example Calculation

Let's assume the following values:

GSM = 200 g/m²
Density = 0.5 g/cm³

Using the formula:

\[ \text{Thickness} (\mu m) = \left(\frac{200}{0.5}\right) \times 1000 = 400000 \]

The thickness is 400,000 µm.
