Mach Number to Velocity Calculator

Calculate Velocity from Mach Number

Formula

The formula to calculate the local velocity (V) from the Mach number (M) is:

\[ V = M \cdot c \]

Where:

What is Mach Number?

The Mach number is a dimensionless quantity in fluid dynamics representing the ratio of the flow velocity past a boundary to the local speed of sound. A Mach number less than 1 indicates subsonic flow; a Mach number of 1 indicates transonic flow; a Mach number greater than 1 indicates supersonic flow; and a Mach number greater than 5 is often referred to as hypersonic flow.

Example Calculation 1

Let's assume the following values:

Using the formula:

\[ V = 2 \cdot 343 = 686 \, \text{m/s} \]

The local velocity is 686 m/s.

Example Calculation 2

Let's assume the following values:

Using the formula:

\[ V = 0.85 \cdot 343 = 291.55 \, \text{m/s} \]

The local velocity is 291.55 m/s.
