$η = \frac{ρ \times g \times Q \times H}{P}$

Where:

$η$ is the Efficiency
$ρ$ is the Density of the Fluid (kg/m³)
$g$ is the Gravitational Constant (9.81 m/s²)
$Q$ is the Flow Rate (m³/s)
$H$ is the Head (meters)
$P$ is the Power Input (Watts)

What is Pump Efficiency?

Pump efficiency is a measure of how effectively a pump converts the mechanical energy supplied to it (power input) into hydraulic energy (power output). It is calculated as the ratio of the power output to the power input, typically expressed as a percentage.

Example Calculation 1

Let's assume the following values:

Density of the Fluid ( $ρ$ ) = 1000 kg/m³
Flow Rate ( $Q$ ) = 0.1 m³/s
Head ( $H$ ) = 10 meters
Power Input ( $P$ ) = 5000 Watts

Using the formula:

$η = \frac{1000 \times 9.81 \times 0.1 \times 10}{5000} = 0.1962 \text{ or } 19.62\%$

The Pump Efficiency is 19.62%.

Example Calculation 2

Let's assume the following values:

Density of the Fluid ( $ρ$ ) = 850 kg/m³
Flow Rate ( $Q$ ) = 0.05 m³/s
Head ( $H$ ) = 15 meters
Power Input ( $P$ ) = 3000 Watts

Using the formula:

$η = \frac{850 \times 9.81 \times 0.05 \times 15}{3000} = 0.2081 \text{ or } 20.81\%$

The Pump Efficiency is 20.81%.
