Hill Grade Definition

A hill grade is defined as the percentage of slope on average of a certain hiking trail. It represents the steepness of the trail and is calculated by dividing the elevation gain by the horizontal distance and then multiplying by 100.

Example Calculation

Let's consider an example:

Elevation Gain (EG): 200 meters
Horizontal Distance (HD): 1000 meters

Using the formula to calculate the Hill Grade:

\[ \text{G} = \frac{200}{1000} \times 100 = 20 \, \% \]

This demonstrates that with an elevation gain of 200 meters and a horizontal distance of 1000 meters, the hill grade would be 20%.
